In early Norse mythology the Valkyries
were sinister spirits of slaughter soaring over the battlefields like birds of prey to claim the souls of fallen heroes.
They were wild and gleeful spirits
of disorder and destruction.
Later mythology portayed them as mounted Amazons or beautiful swan maidens. Known as Oden's sheild maidens they would swoop down onto the battle field and gather up only the most heroic warriors.
These they would take to their God Oden to join the great army of heroes who fought in the battle of the Gods.
